PIAUÍ
Teresina

Piauí, pronounced in four syllables, is another poor state of small population and medium size. It is one of six in Brazil that does not seem to have had an electric tramway. Its capital city, Teresina, had an animal tramway, but the city was not visited and nothing could be learned about it elsewhere. There is a brief, intriguing reference in a history of Teresina to a "bonde motor" borrowed from São Paulo [A. Tito Filho, Memorial da Cidade Verde (Teresina, 1978), pp. 24 and 46], so it is possible that Piauí's capital had some sort of self-propelled streetcar(s).
